انرژی به عنوان یکی از مهمترین عوامل تولید و همچنین به عنوان یکی از ضروری ترین محصولات نهایی, جایگاه ویژه ای در تجارت و رشد و توسعه اقتصاد ی داراست. طی سال های اخیر اهمیت انرژی پس از دو بحران انرژی در دهه 70 میلادی مورد توجه قرار گرفته است. در این خصوص، بررسی رابطه بین مصرف انرژی و تجارت خارجی از اهمیت ویژه ای برخوردار گشته است به طوری که اگر در خصوص مصرف انرژی و تجارت، رابطه علی از طرف مصرف انرژی به صادرات و واردات باشد، هرگونه کاهش در مصرف انرژی از طرف سیاست های حفظ منابع انرژی، حجم صادرات و واردات را کاهش داده و باعث کاهش حجم تجارت خارجی می شود. همچنین سیاست های حفظ منابع انرژی که مصرف انرژی را کاهش می دهد ممکن است فرآیند آزادسازی تجاری که منجر به رشد اقتصادی می شود  را محدود می سازدکه این امر، سیاست های حفظ منابع انرژی را در مقابل سیاست های آزاد سازی تجاری قرار می دهد. در این مطالعه تاثیر تجارت بر مصرف انرژی از طریق کاربردهای انرژی در فرآیند تولید کالاهای صادراتی و وارداتی و همچنین حمل و نقل مورد توجه قرار گرفت است  و از طریق داده های پانلی، تاثیر تجارت خارجی در قالب صادرات و واردات بر مصرف انرژی در کشورهای گروه دی هشت (بنگلادش, مصر, اندونزی, ایران, مالزی, نیجریه, پاکستان و ترکیه) طی سال های 2014-1990 مورد بررسی قرار می گیرد. نتایج مطالعه حاکی از وجود تاثیر مثبت و معنی دار تجارت خارجی بر روی مصرف انرژی در کشورهای گروه دی هشت می باشد. همچنین یافته های مطالعه نشان می دهند قیمت انرژی تاثیر منفی و معنی داری روی مصرف انرژی دارد.
